What is a harmonic and what is a harmonic chart?

Harmonic charts are not the primary issue with relocation astrology per se. The planets are going to be in the same signs when you relocate, and most of harmonic astrology has to do with planets being at specific angles to each other in a harmonic that it wouldn’t be in the natal chart. The only differences are with the angles of the planet to the relocated ascendant and midheaven. This will change, and Astro Maps, specifically the ones that you can see on the Sirius program, and especially with Treasure Maps show that quite clearly.

So, with that in mind, I’ll explain what a harmonic is.

If two planets are 10 degrees apart, they would be 50 degrees apart on the 5th harmonic. The 5th harmonic magnifies everything five times. So two planets that are 100 degrees apart would be 500 degrees apart in the 5th harmonic. Because there’s only 360 degres in a circle, the distance ‘wraps around’ the circle; if you subtracted 360 from 500 degrees those planets would then be 140 degrees apart.

Two planets that are 180 degrees apart would be 900 degrees apart in the 5th harmonic. This time, you have to subtract 360 twice, and you end up with 180 degrees distance. Now, two planets that are 72 degrees apart end up as 360 degrees apart, or zero (conjunct), and two planets that are 144 degrees apart end up as 720 degrees apart, or, again zero (720 – 360 -360 = 0), conjunct.

We call planets 72 degrees apart quintiles and planets that are 144 degrees apart biquintiles. I myself have a quintile-biquintile-biquintile aspect pattern in my chart between Venus, Saturn, and Pluto. Venus and Pluto are quintile, both planets are biquintile Saturn. No part of the wheel is uninvolved. The orbs aren’t super-small, but they’re small enough that it counts.

Fifth harmonic aspects, or quintiles, tend to have to do with creativity and play. Someone with a lot of quintiles tend to dislike drudgery and have to come up with more creative ways to make money. (That is what David Cochrane planted into my head five years ago, anyway, and I identify with it.)

Harmonics are synonomous with vibrations. When I finished Cochrane’s Vibrational Astrology program last year, we had been taught the meanings over every one of the harmonics, or vibrations, up to a specific point. (The research has made it to the 43rd harmonic, at this point).

Two planets 10 degrees apart in the natal end up 90 degrees apart in the 9th harmonic. 9th harmonic has to do with how one integrates in one’s community. Communitarian ideals are often associated with left-of-center politics, and if there’s a strong 9th harmonic in the world our society would be structured in more liberal ways. Joe Biden and Barack Obama both have strong 9-vibration in their charts, and they are both very compatible in the 9th harmonic as well, which is a major reason why their relationship was so successful.

(At this moment we are in a strong 13 vibration. Neptune and Pluto are in 13th harmonic from each other, specifically 2/13 of the zodiac from each other, or just over 55 degrees. Because Neptune and Pluto are such slow moving planets the 13th vibration will be here for a long time, actually from 2015 until early 2024. If another planet activates them in the 13th harmonic the influence is even stronger. 13 vibration tends to favor right wing ideologies overall. It’s a major reason why there are so many right wing governments in power all over the world right now. 13 vibration has to do with things like individual greatness, heroism, rising above mediocrity, inner individual personal responsibility. 13 vibration would not favor someone successful paying a lot in taxes to help the community, because the basic premise is that the individual has ‘earned’ it. This doesn’t exclusively have to be the province of the right — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has strong 13 harmonics in her chart — but it often ends up that way.)

Two planets 10 degrees apart in the 37th harmonic would be 370 degrees, or 10 degrees apart. This is a good explanation of 37, 41, and 43 harmonics. I have a very strong 37 harmonic and a pretty strong 43 harmonic. I definitely identify with the ‘bad-ass witch’ moniker — in my creative outlet (radio show) and on the decisions I make in life.

Each of the harmonics has its own theme and we will have a definition of it through the 43rd harmonic at least, especially if it is a prime number.

So how are these harmonics expressed on an Astro Map?

Because the Ascendant and Midheaven change whereever you go (especially if the changes are in longitude and/or at a high latitude), this is something that David Cochrane has addressed on his Sirius software. Unlike the Time Passages software, his maps include many different types of aspects to the angular lines, not just the lines themselves.

There are four settings and for this map that’s below, we have an ‘extremely detailed’ map of Hawaii:

Hawaii has a lot of lines in the “Extremely Detailed” setting. There are lines that have to do with 9-vibrations, 7-vibrations and 5-vibrations to the Ascendant and Midheaven, along with the more traditional aspects (square, opposition, sextile, trine, conjunction).

As noted in the caption below the map, we can see a line that says Sun 100 degrees from the Ascendant, moving somewhat diagonally (northwest to southeast) through Oahu. That means that the Sun is 80 degrees from the Descendant. (We are using the Zodiac Longitude settings in this map, and they’re generally simpler to understand.) We can see lines that say 51 deg 26 minutes and 128 deg 34 minutes. These are examples of septile (7th harmonic) lines. (We didn’t cover 7th harmonic yet — but I will say that it has a lot to do with quiet, introverted discipline — think of the young child spending hours each day learning the piano until she is good enough to become a concert pianist. That’s basically the idea.)

It’s unclear what this all means, although if you to click on the Jupiter septile line that runs in between Oahu and Kauai, you get this interpretation:

*** Ascendant Septile Jupiter ***      (Orb: 0 Deg 00 Min)
Professional and business relationships work out well in this area, and you are able to find good service people (doctor, dentist, car mechanic, plumber, etc.) to work with.

This is something of a canned interpretation, but there is a good deal of truth in it in most cases, and that’s one reason I use Astro Maps in my interpretations for clients.

All of this can be distilled by Treasure Maps — in other words, each Treasure Map ‘category’ distills certain types of aspects and planets within it, leaving out the aspects and planets that don’t have to do with its ‘theme.’

Here’s a Friendship & Family, detailed, for a certain person (me):

My Friendship and Family, detailed map has to do with ‘comfort zones’ on a business level. It involves most planets, not just Moon and Venus — which would be on the basic Friendship & Family map. You can see that most of the lines are multiples of 20 degrees, such as the Jupiter 140 degrees from the midheaven — which means it’s 40 degrees from the nadir — going through Molokai, and the Mercury 160 degrees from the midheaven, going east of the Big Island.

So the Friendship & Family, detailed map has mostly to do with 9-harmonic aspects to the Ascendant and Midheaven, which would make sense because favorable business relationships in a location require integration with the community in some fashion, that fashion having to do with the planet involved.

I’m not seeing too many of the other aspects being expressed in Treasure Maps — by that I mean the 5- and 7-harmonic aspects. With one exception — Culture & Creativity, which is a map that I don’t typically use for clients unless asked or unless I’m doing just a Basic Astro Map workup (see my consultations page).

Here you can see two quintile-oriented lines on this map — including a 36 degres from the midheaven line involving Saturn and a 108 degrees from the midheaven line involving Pluto. Also right to the west of the map is a 144 degrees from the Midheaven line for Jupiter.

The generic interpretation that Sirius uses for the Pluto aspects in these cases is as follows:

*** IC Quintile Pluto ***      (Orb: 0 Deg 00 Min)
Your career or profession is likely to head full steam ahead here, but whether it brings happiness or disillusionment depends largely on your depth of perception and ability to be true to your deepest values and feelings.

*** IC Quintile Pluto ***      (Orb: 0 Deg 00 Min)
Your career or profession is likely to head full steam ahead here, but whether it brings happiness or disillusionment depends largely on your depth of perception and ability to be true to your deepest values and feelings.

* IC Biquintile Saturn *      (Orb: 0 Deg 41 Min)
You may be drawn into a world of elegance and snobbery, or become painfully aware of differences between the rich and poor. If handled properly, a good place for perfecting professional skills.

This doesn’t tell us very much about how the creative powers that quintile aspects give us to Pluto and Saturn. Pluto energy comes from something very deep within us, to the point that it’s coming from past lives and the occult and forces beyond our comprehension. Saturn energy, in the best sense, has to do with valuing things that are real, deep, and lasting — things that last past death (as David Cochrane taught us). Our creativity, depending on the line (and it looks like the two areas that Saturn and Pluto dictate for this map overlap), is going to have to do with these areas of life.

All of this gives us a pretty good idea of how harmonic astrology does and does not affect relocation. It’s important that we work that out. Remember, a harmonic chart is not a ‘real’ chart. It is an illustration of aspects that we wouldn’t easily be able to see on a natal chart — really, are you going to be able to identify two planets that are 51 degrees 26 minutes apart? — that are just as valuable as the things we can easily see.
