What is Lilith?

A client I was working with last week was somewhat fixated on Lilith in her chart, and I decided to read up on it — because no astrologer knows everything and with the dozens of things I was focusing on already, things that do generally work, that are often ‘enough’ to make some firm conclusions about where are good and bad places for someone to live, I was not learning about the asteroids. And here I was, thinking Lilith was an asteroid.

Which it is, although not one of the most major asteroids in the solar system; it usually doesn’t make the Top 10 asteroids. Read about halfway down the page for that explanation. Actually, that piece also includes an explanation for what is more commonly known as Black Moon Lilith, which is more commonly used.

This client knows things that I don’t, which is usually enough motivation for me to learn something new. This article explains how Lilith is, celestially:

“Black Moon Lilith is the geometric point in the sky that marks the furthest point of the moon’s orbit around the earth.”

Much like the North Node, there is a Mean position of Black Moon Lilith (which in the case of the North Node always goes backwards, and at the same speed), and a True position (which, in the case of the North Node lurches forward several times per month though the overall effect is that it moves the same amount as the True Node). In the case of the Node we’d be more inclined to use the True Node in our calculations, though we don’t get that luxury if we’re quoting from the Secret Language of Destiny.

From what I can tell, most astrological software uses the Mean position of Lilith, but I could be wrong about that. Sirius, in all its comprehensiveness, allows us to take either Mean or True or both, and based on looking at my own chart wheel, there can be quite a difference — my True Node is at 11 degrees Cancer but my Mean Node is at 0 degrees Leo.

As for what it all means, well, now that is where we get into the deep darkness. The Vice article I linked to earlier has it as follows:

“Black Moon Lilith represents a person’s primitive impulses and behavior in their rawest form. It reveals our repressed sexuality, together with what makes us feel most vulnerable; it expresses the dark side of one’s personality, buried deep in the subconscious realms of our psyche. Knowing where Black Moon Lilith is located in a birth chart can reveal information related to the shadow self, and can also determine possible hidden sexual fantasies and secret fetishes.”

I want to get to the core of what Lilith is even though I’m not sure how powerful a celestial marker it is. Many astrologers can do their craft quite well keeping it simple and ignoring all the asteroids and things like Black Moon Lilith. They perform a useful service to their clientele. Many students of astrology who are still considered amateurs, on the other hand, can be quite interested in these things as part of their own self-discovery.

I have no specific reason to believe that Black Moon Lilith, or what house it might be in, is at all related to relocation astrology. If you read an article suggesting otherwise, bring it to my attention.

To start, my Lilith is in Cancer, and I don’t have any particular Cancer influence other than that my current Midheaven is Cancer and my Mars is currently in my 4th house. But Lilith seems like it could be a photo-negative response like Saturn (if you don’t believe Saturn is, look at the Round Art interpretation for Saturn in Leo). We can look through some interpretations to try to get a better sense of what’s going on.

Here’s Cafe Astrology’s take:
Lilith in Cancer has felt ashamed for being needy or dependent for whatever reason and feels awkward or even angry with people who display these traits without apology. Their nurturing nature was stifled in some way and they can feel very uncomfortable asking for help and/or expressing their own nurturing nature as a result. This discomfort can lead to extremes of behavior in this area and then misgivings afterward, and the cycle then continues. Working on self-acceptance is the key to empowerment. This can also apply to Lilith in the 4th house.

That seems plausible to me. This is another take from a source I wasn’t previously aware of, the Hoodwitch:
In Cancer, Lilith struggles to reconcile the feminine-as-nurturer dynamic with the all-consuming seductress energy that is her essence. It’s a weird combination, but one that works. Consider dark mother goddess Kali Ma, or Anjelica Huston, who plays modern dark matriarch Mortitica Adaams. Your potential downfall? Caring for others who don’t care for you.

However, that’s incredibly simplistic relative to THIS, from The Study of Astrology, a source I’d never seen before:
When the Black Moon Lilith is in the sign of Cancer the dark negative side of the emotions are influenced by the Moon itself.  The position of having Lilith in Cancer is among the most volatile placements of Lilith in Astrology.  In the sign of Cancer the Black Moon is intimately linked with the Moon since the sign Cancer rules the Moon. When the Black Moon and Astrological Moon tie together the emotional mind and dark thinking of Lilith will merge and become one.   There may be a very dark overtone aura in the thinking always present due to the merging of Cancer energy and the Black Moon. Dark negative thoughts can embody the emotions and always be underlying in effecting personal moods and actions one takes in the life.

Since the Moon in astrology is linked with the past Lilith in Cancer will be shaped by the memories one has come to experience.  Any kind of dark or negative experience will trigger the eruptive and dark side of Lilith when in Cancer.  Any memory that is negative and pertains to feeling rejected or shamed causes extreme dark thoughts that ruminate in the thinking.  Abandonment, abuse, neglect and feeling unloved in the past can trigger anger and negative emotions that are carried throughout life.  Cancer Lilith experiences are felt to the intense extreme and can be responsible for any number of mental illness such as depression, PTSD and extreme anxiety.  These illness can be difficult to treat and even identify because they are so deeply ingrained in the emotional thinking mind.

Lilith in Cancer will be very devious and use negative experiences and trauma to try and gain a sense of comfort and stability.  One will portray an aura of having an overly sensitive and fragile outer shell that can be used for personal advantages.  Cancer Lilith will appear weak and lust for the strength of another to care and nurture their emotions. One can be quite private about intentions to gain comfort but be very emotionally manipulative and cunning to get what is wanted underneath it all.  Crying, playing the victim and emotional blackmail can be such ways Lilith in Cancer manipulates others for their needs.

The need to go such extremes to try and secure comfort and nurturing for Cancer Lilith are oft linked to a negative childhood growing up.  Early on there was a feeling of rejection or shame associated with the family that raised them.  Most likely there is an underlying feeling of being the black sheep of the family from never fitting into the context of the early domestic family.  Sometimes there may of been abuse growing up that spurned the foundation of dark emotions to develop.  The experience with the mother in particular may of been very negative, abusive or full of emotional manipulation.

Any of such negative past experiences becomes the underpinning for the dark emotions that Lilith in Cancer deals with throughout life.  There can be a feeling of being trapped in the past that is hard to escape. Lilith in Cancer will look to establish it’s own sense of domestic life departed from the early childhood family experience.  One will do this in order to free itself from the shame of their birth family. Cancer Lilith will wish not to partake in the tradition of the family culture and reject it.  In return one will desperately seek starting a family of it’s own to try and run from the past and find the emotional security that may of been lacking.  Even if there was no abuse growing up Lilith can have inspiration to run from their domestic family and start a family of their own.  The tendency will be to become a martyr to create one’s independence with regardless of the background one was raised in.

This NAILS it, for me. And I’ve only posted the first five paragraphs of a 17-paragraph screed.

This gets into some pretty psychological stuff — always good for people who want to be more self-aware. Do you see how the right interpretation of Lilith in a sign can enlighten?

To illustrate further, I’m going to end this by posting the first three paragraphs of the same site’s take on Black Moon Lilith in Libra:
When the Black Moon Lilith is in the sign of Libra the dark negative side of the emotions are influenced by the masculine nature of planet Venus.  Having Lilith in Libra can make for having a hard time accepting oneself for who they are. There can be shame and rejection pertaining to how one presents themselves in terms of beauty and attractiveness.  Lilith here can feel unattractive and struggle believing they are not beautiful and worthy of admiration.  Sometimes this can stem from events like peer pressure, bullying or simply a lack of admiration for the efforts one puts worth in how they appear. Regardless of what occurs; Lilith faces rejection and shame which can make one sensitive to the point of being needy for being admired or found attractive.

When Lilith is in Libra living life without the comfort of social attention can be very difficult.  Lilith can live with fear of being alone and rejected causing a desire to go towards great lengths to secure attention. The use of seductive or charming tactics can be such ways attract the attention of someone socially. Over the course of life Libra Lilith will seek a business or marriage partner for personal gain to qualm the fear of going about life alone.  One here may marry and find them self partnering for several reasons; be it the attention it brings from a partner or the actual attention the marriage itself generates publicly.  One may also simply enter a marriage or business partnership for the money or assets for personal gain to live a more luxurious life.

Being rejected from partnership or in social settings can be truly detrimental to Libra Lilith as it can lead to to a multitude dark negative thinking patterns. Sometimes the fear of being rejected can be so great Lilith can settle for having someone just to be with them.  There may be a total neglect of being driven towards entering relationships on a basis of compatibility.  This need can lead to potentially missing out on someone they are truly compatible with and sharing a deep intimate relationship.  Sometimes Lilith may even shift their personality to accommodate someone just to keep a relationship pleasant so the partner “loves them” or accepts them.   In other instances the fear of rejection can lead Lilith to being timid in seeking relationships due to negative self esteem.  Lilith in Libra seeks partnerships just to satisfy a need to be found desirable or attractive by someone else.  The attention gained from being found attractive can be the total basis of the relationship which may result in a relationship lacking any true depth.

You can now see that this interpretation from this incredible site is a way to uncover the issues your people and the people you want to get to know are dealing with. Yes, it makes everything more complicated, but can be yet another form of education for someone like myself to disseminate, at the right time and place, during my “General Astrological Services” service that’s offered on the consultations page.

I’m going to leave it there, take a little break, and then read both Libra and Cancer again.
